A Stuart sitter, possibly Henry Stuart, 1st Duke of Gloucester (1640–1660), wearing suit of armour, blue sash over his left shoulder, white collar edged with lace and held in place with a pink sash ribbon bow, his curling brown hair worn to his shoulders.
Gilt-metal frame with mother-of-pearl panel to the reverse.

  • The present lot falls into the category of tiny commemorative miniatures portraying Stuart sitters that were painted for Royalists during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

    The sitter in the present lot bears a physical likeness to Henry Stuart as portrayed by John Hoskins in his triple portrait of Stuart with elder siblings, James, Duke of York (1633-1701) and Princess Elizabeth (1635-1650), currently in the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (D. Lavender, The Monarchy in Portrait Miniatures from Elizabeth to Queen Victoria, 1993, pl.25).
