Richard Cosway R.A. (British, 1742-1821)
A self-portrait of the artist with his wife Maria, both seated in a woodland glade; he, playing a lute and wearing doublet and hose, his hat dressed with ostrich feathers; she, leaning back and gazing up at her husband, her sash ribbon tied in a bow at the back of her waist, her hair plaited and upswept into a knot at the crown of her head, the front curled.
Ink on laid paper, mounted on card with painted border, signed on the obverse and dated Rd: Cosway. R.A. Delint:/ 1783, ebonised and gilt-wood frame.
