moulded and painted in polychrome depicting Afrasiyab and Luhrasp in combat on horseback, a third wounded warrior in the foreground, above three inscription filled cartouches, framed

  • Muhammad Baqir Tawus is recorded as a painter who worked in the technique of layeh-chini, using a paste to create low relief (see M. A. Karimzadeh The Lives and Art of Old Painters of Iran, vol. 2., London 1990, pp. 667-8). He records a piece at the Victoria and Albert Museum dated 1226 (1811-12), a piece in the Khalili Collection (Khalili et al. Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, Part two, 1997, cat 316) and another dated 1200 (1785-6).
