A large Ottoman repoussé silver Charger
probably Egypt dated AH 1245/ AD 1829
of circular form, decorated in repoussé with a roundel containing an elephant within a six pointed star on a ground of vegetal interlace, surrounded by a band of inscription in thuluth, and a further band containing pairs of flower heads interspersed by foliate sprays on a ground of floral interlace with perching birds and further inscription in thuluth, with tughra stamp and maker's mark
52 cm. diam.; 1841 g.

  • The maker's mark reads: "kashf N. 45".

    For objects with the same stamp, see See G. Kurkman, Ottoman Silver Marks, 1996, p. 56. Kurkman explains that the letter N stands for the month of Ramadan and the date [12]45. He adds that such marks were seen on silver that came from Egypt.

    The tughra is unclear, but is likely to correspond to that of Mahmud II (1223-55/1808-39).
