Footnotes

  • This sash belongs to a group that was most probably woven in Persia, but could also have been made in India, where such sashes were very popular and many are found. Sashes of this kind or related types are often found on Mughal paintings of the 17th and 18th Centuries. One of the two examples in The Museum of Decorative Art, Copenhagen (Kjeld von Folsach and Anne-Marie Keblow Bernsted, Woven Treasures - Textiles from the World of Islam, Copenhagen, 1993, p. 119-20, nos. 43 and 44) has an inventory stamp of Asaf Jah, the first Nizam of Hyderabad and the date AH 1159/ AD 1746. Another example can be found in the Musee de Louvre, Paris (Arabesques et jardins de paradis, Exhibition Catalogue, Musee de Louvre, Paris, 16th October 1989 - 15th January 1990, p. 50, no. 26).
