A Safavid tinned-copper Bowl
Persia, late 16th Century
of squat form, narrowing at neck and flaring at rim, decorated with an undulating key-band of stylised cloudbands on a field of lobed cartouches containing split-palmette arabesques and flower heads, the inscription band to neck on a scrolling floriated arabesque laid over a hatched ground
31cm. diam.


  • The inscriptions consist of: on the rim: 'Its owner, 'Ali ibn Haji Malik Ahmad'; and around the neck, the Call to God to bless the Prophet and the Twelve Imams.

    A bowl of similar design and dated AH 1000/AD 1591-92 can be found in the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (Piotrovsky, Mikhail, Iran in the Heritage, The Formation of Collections, St Petersburg 2004, p. 122, no. 132).
