  • The painting is closely based on a drawing by A. D. Soltykov, who accompanied the Russian mission to Persia, depicting himself drawing the Prince (later Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar) on a visit to Tabriz in 1838. The image was also a plate in Soltykov's Voyage en Perse (1851). See L. S. Diba (ed.), Royal Persian Paintings: the Qajar Epoch 1785-1925, pp. 52-53, where the drawing is illustrated (fig. 15).
