Footnotes

  • Provenance: H.M.Knight, Amsterdam, acquired before 1971

Agate was admired for its natural lustre and colouring but also for its similarities to the most popular hardstone of all, jade. The greyish tone and mottled russet splashes of the present piece can also be seen in jade; compare for example a lotus brush washer from the Ming dynasty illustrated by R.Kleiner in Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, no.48.
