Lot Details
A bamboo brush pot, bitong
Dated to AD1817, and possibly of the period
Decorated with two rabbits beside a spray of magnolia, their attention focused on the three carrots lying before them, and bearing a three-line, calligraphic inscription.
13cm (5 1/8in) high

Footnotes

  • The inscription reads: '玉兔呈祥,丁丑立春,半山刊', 'yutu chengxiang, dingchou lichun, banshankan', meaning: 'The jade hare brings prosperity, beginning of the Spring of the Dingchou year, engraved at Ban Shan'.

Originally, the sentence used to read 遇兔呈祥, meaning 'coming across the rabbit brings good luck'. As an homophone of 'yu' 遇, 'yu' 玉, meaning 'jade', came with time to replace the original character, perhaps also because of the metaphor for Moon and its association thereby with the tale of the rabbit and the three sages. It is now commonly used as an auspicious blessing during the year of the Rabbit.
