Footnotes

  • On the 2nd September 1946, the US Liberty ship Helena Mojeska, laden with Marshall Aid for Germany, ran aground on the Goodwin Sands off Ramsgate and broke in two. The two halves settled together and over a period her cargo was salvaged and taken ashore. In January 1947 the bow portion was floated off and towed to the River Blackwater in Essex, where she was a notable sight, joined in June by the aft portion, the two halves moored alongside together. Later in the year, they were towed to Grays in Essex and broken up. Breaking in two was a not uncommon event for welded Liberty Ships, constructed in a hurry for the War effort, as the notorious wreck of the Richard Montgomery will testify.
