A fine exhibition quality model of the Alfred Holt Line Machaon 1959
Built by GR Mitchell in 1976 to a scale of 1:256. Composite hull, painted black to the waterline and red below, with a pink boot top and four blade brass propeller. Laid timber and painted decks, with a white superstructure. Details include anchors, cable and windlass, cargo derricks and winches, ship's boats on davits, accommodation ladder. Mounted on posts in a glazed display case, together with a timber transit case. 29.5x9x10ins. (75x23x25cm)

Footnotes

  • The MV Machaon was built in Dundee in 1959 for the Blue Funnel Line, as one of the new "M" class general cargo liners. At 8530 grt, she incorporated such innovations as single pull hatches, air conditioning in the passenger spaces and remote telegraphs to the engine room. She served with Blue Funnel until 1977, when she was transferred to Elder Dempster, being finally broken up in 1979.
