Footnotes

  • Robert Havell Junior (1793 - 1878) worked as an engraver in London before moving to the United States of America in 1839 at the invitation of John James Audubon, who became a close friend.
Havell was the principal engraver of John James Audubon's Birds of America and his aquatints of all but the first ten plates are recognized as a significant artistic achievement in their own right and an essential component of the success of the book, which became one of the most significant natural history publication ever produced.
