Off to the fishing grounds signed with initials 'C.N.H. and dated 1904 (lower left) watercolour heightened with white 44 x 67cm (17 5/16 x 26 3/8in).
A very similar composition in oils is in the Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead (titled 'Home Wind').
Hemy often painted an oil and a watercolour of the same subject. He would paint the watercolour first and then work it up into a gallery painting. The watercolour was usually on a smaller scale, and in many cases livelier and fresher than the oil.
We are grateful to Margaret Powell for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
