PROVENANCE: Collection of Freddie Swann, Oakfield, Wimbledon Common Sale, Christie's London, 15th March 1925. Catalogued as 'J. Constable, On the Lower Thames', reserve 6 guineas, unsold with Thos. Agnew & Sons Ltd. Private collection, UK
Graham Reynolds has identified this as an early work, and in his opinion one of the sketches which Constable made on board 'The Coutts', a merchant ship which he accompanied during April/May 1803. According to Leslie, Constable made about 130 sketches during the trip of which 47 are accounted for. Those known sketches mostly comprise shipping views on the Thames or Medway.
