Although the exact subject of this drawing is unknown, it has been suggested that it might have been a design for the painted decoration of a musical instrument, probably a piano, conceived around 1880. Burne-Jones undertook design decoration for several pianos and worked with the Broadwood firm to 'reform' the shape of the typical grand piano.
