This watercolour, like many by Thomas Girtin and Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (1775-1851) that were executed during the 1790s in Dr Munro's School, relates to a drawing by John Robert Cozens (1752-1799). The only significant difference between the current lot and the Cozens drawing is the addition of a figure on horseback disappearing down the track towards Rome, (see The Art of Alexander and John Robert Cozens, Yale, 1980, no. 98 from the Beaumont Album, ill. plate 40).
