Quai de Paris, Rouen signed and dated 'Atkinson Grimshaw. 5.93.' (lower right); signed, inscribed with title and dated on the reverse oil on board 17 x 36.5cm (6 11/16 x 14 3/8in).
PROVENANCE: Private collection, UK
Atkinson Grimshaw painted a number of views of Rouen at night; the present work, and a similar composition offered at Sotheby's London (15 July 2008, lot 59), were painted towards the end of the artist's life. Alex Robertson notes that Grimshaw is thought to have only once travelled overseas, in 1878, when he travelled to Germany with his children's governess; his first known view of Rouen is dated in this year so he presumably visited the city en route to Germany.1
