Footnotes

  • François Linke (1855-1946) was born in Austria, but moved to Paris where he established his cabinet making business. From around 1882 he traded independently at 170, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, and after 1900, at 26 Place Vendôme. Linke was aided by some of the most skilled Parisian craftsmen, including the sculptor Leon Message, who designed sculptural mounts for him and other pieces on his stands at the major international exhibitions. Linke was awarded a Gold medal and his success acquired wealthy patrons from across the world. He was admired so much in France that he was awarded with the 'Croix de la Légion d'Honneur' in 1906.
