Pierre Jules Mène, French (1810-1879)
A 19th century bronze model of a stallion
Cheval a la Barriere N°1 Djinn
dark brown patination with light brown high points, signed P.J. MÊNE, on a naturalistic oval base, 19cm high x 26cm wide
Mêne created the plaster version of this model in 1846, modelling a bronze version that same year in his own workshop, and finally exhibiting the piece at the Paris salon of 1849. Djinn was the name of the horse Mêne modelled the piece after. One of the sculptor's most popular and widely sought after casts, it was initially produced by his own workshop, then after 1879 by the Mêne-Cain workshop and later by Susse at the start of the 20th century.
