• Several versions of this theme are known. They are inspired by the designs of Jean Pillement (d. 1808), appointed painter to Queen Marie-Antoinette. He published 130 prints from his paintings in 1767, of which several were in the Chinoiserie taste. The pagoda in the middle follows designs by Fischer von Erlach, 1721, 'Entwurf einer historischen Architektur', fig.75.
  
  Two closely related versions of the landscape of this tapestry, depicting herons and a peacock in the foreground, are illustrated in H. Goebel, 1923, 'Wandteppiche', Leipzig, vol.
