Footnotes

  • This model is illustrated on page 207, M. Poletti & A. Richarme Barye, Gallimard, Paris, 2000. Barye produced the first edition in 1838, and in 1857 he modelled a second version on a shaped plinth, which did not show the gazelle's intestines which are visible in the first. The second edition proved to be more popular, and was also cast by Barbedienne after the sculptor's death.
