the drum case surmounted by a gilt bronze cockerel standing on a pile of books, raised on an oval, stepped plinth base surmounted by a pair of classically attired maidens, one drawing a portrait the other with an open book inscribed L'EDUDE LA PLUS NÉCESSAIRE A LHOMME EST CELLE DE LHOMME, centred by a relief panel depicting allegorical putti, the signed white enamelled dial with Roman numerals, the twin train movement with silk suspension and outside countwheel striking on a bell, 53cm wide, 12cm deep, 45cm high (20.5" wide, 4.5" deep, 17.5" high)
