Footnotes

  • These bronzes, erroneously inscribed Girardon and Marsy are after Boizot's figural groups of Prosperine and Pluto and Orithyia and Boreas which were exhibited at the Salon of 1786. Designed as a pair, they were influenced by the earlier marble groups of the same subjects produced by Francois Girardon and Gaspard Marsy, that were commissioned by Colbert in 1674 for the gardens of Versaille.

The Wallace Collection has reductions in bronze of both Marsy and Girardon's groups, as well as a pair of 18th century bronze models of both Prosperine and Pluto and Orithyia and Boreas after Louis-Simon Boizot.
