Lot Details
A late 18th century mahogany longcase clock with 'First Period' painted dial
Warren, Canterbury
the hood with three finials and wavy cresting over canted corners and a long trunk door to a tall base with applied panel on a shaped apron, the 12 inch arched painted dial with raised gilt gesso spandrel corners centred by cherries and flowers, Roman and Arabic numerals with dotted minutes enclosing the subsidiary seconds dial and date sector, the eight day weight driven movement with anchor escapement rack striking on a bell 2.24m (7ft 5ins) high

Footnotes

  • James Warren of Canterbury worked from St George's Gate from 1767-93. His son, also James, succeeded him and both are well respected for their elegant clocks. The dial of this clock is typical of the first painted dial designs of the 1770-90 period, rather than apply cast brass spandrels, the corner decoration is built up by layers of gesso which is then gilded, furthermore, every five minute indication is given.

Saleroom notices

  • Please note this clock is lacking pendulum and weights.
