An important George II wooden doll, English circa 1750
The painted gesso face with defined carved nose and chin, rouged cheeks, finely painted slightly smiling red mouth, dots for nostrils and at corners of each eye, inserted black enamel eyes with painted fine lashes, the eye brows in one line with feathering above and below, carved ears, replaced dark brown wig in long plait with coral ribbon, the well formed torso tapering at the waist, hinted bust with red nipples and carved buttocks, double jointed shoulders with gesso covered, painted and well-moulded arms and double jointed elbows, with delicately carved large hands, shaped legs jointed at hips and knees with carved ankles, wearing her original cream silk open robe with embroidered dotted green stripes, flounced lace engageantes, two petticoats and lawn chemise, over a boned cream silk corset, pale blue damask slippers with pink rosettes, lace cap, damask stomacher, straw work bag, hanker-chief and kid gloves, (chips on left eyebrow, cheek, nose, right breast, right shoulder and back of neck, left eye scratched, one finger missing, paint to fingers chipped), 42cm (16 1/2in) tall.
