Footnotes

  • This remarkable collection of studies and sketches all date from the 1950s. The present owner was accepted as a pupil by Spooner. His teaching method was to ask the pupil to attend with a primed board, which Spooner used to paint a study. The pupil observed the progress of the painting and Spooner commented on his methods, and after the pupil practised by copying or using the techniques as a basis for his own similar painting. It is these spontaneous studies which are offered for sale here.

Arthur Spooner studied at Nottingham School of Art, and was later a teacher there. Initially he was taught to paint in the neo-classical style of later Victorian painters like Herbert Draper and Frank Dicksee, but he then adopted the methods of British impressionist painters. He excelled in this style of painting depicting a wide range of subjects. He was a particularly fine painter of horses and figures, and a fine observer of the effects of light on a landscape.
