J. Beveridge (1852-1899): A long nose Baffing Spoon circa 1880s
Lightly stained, ram's horn insert to leading edge of sole, neat lead back-weight, hickory shaft with some remnants of original hide grip complete with underlisting.
38 inches length; head 5 x 1½ x 1 inches

  • Provenance: The Ian Henderson Collection

    Born in St. Andrews in 1852, James Beveridge learned club making in the Tom Morris shop.
    Peter Georgiady: Compendium of British Club Makers, "His superior abilities as a club maker earned him the nickname 'Professor'". He continued making clubs whilst at North Berwick and the Royal Club Isle of Wight. In 1894 he moved to the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. He died in 1899.
