Footnotes

  • The recipient of the 1908 Olympic bronze medal was Beatrice Hill-Lowe (1868-1951), the first Irishwoman to win an Olympic medal. Beatrice was born in Ardee, Co. Louth 1868. Beatrice represented Britain because at the time Ireland was not allowed to enter an official team in the Olympics Games until 1924. At the time the archery event was the only sporting event open to women. This was due to the fact that women were only allowed to compete in a sport whilst fully clothed. In this competition, she took third place in the event with 618 points.
