To include a pair emblematic of the Massacre of the Innocents, both headed by a carved volute-sided capital, with pendant fruiting swag, beneath which stands a turbaned soldier, holding a baby in one hand and a dagger or short sword in the other, standing on a tapering dentilled pedestal, beneath him another figure, that to one pilaster holding a ewer, that to the other holding a book, standing on an Ionic capital beneath which an Atlantes standing on an acanthus-topped plinth, together with a third related pilaster, with similar capital, but with a woman - possibly the Virgin Mary, or possibly Rachel - holding an orb, her other hand protectively grasping a child, another standing at her feet, a grotesque mask and a naked attendant figure below, terminating in an Atlantes, his right arm raised to support a scrolling capital, all 84cm high, (3)

  • The Massacre of the Innocents is an episode of infanticide by Herod the Great. According to the Gospel of Matthew, Herod ordered the execution of all young male children in the village of Bethlehem, so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn King of the Jews whose birth had been announced to him by the Magi.
