A large smooth heavy dark brown gutty ball circa 1850
Formed by the two semi sphere moulds and with a definite raised equator seam. It is generally agreed that there are probably less than 20 surviving smooth golf balls as opposed to what are only cores of later rubber-cored balls. Diameter 2 inches.

Footnotes

  • The Story of the Golf Ball page 11: 'The majority of golf historians believe that the first homogeneous golf ball was probably invented by the Rev. Dr Robert Paterson and later developed by his half brother, John. It really doesn't matter who invented it, its significance being that it changed the game from being an exclusive sport of the rich, to one that could be afforded by the many'.
