Lawrence Toynbee, 1922-2002, the youngest son of the historian Arnold Toynbee, studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford and then taught art at the Ruskin School, Oxford School of Art, and in Bradford. He specialised in painting sporting events, particularly cricket, rugby, golf and football. He succeeded in capturing the rhythms and spirit of the contest. In the 1980s Lord's acquired a collection of Toynbee's work, including 'Hit to Leg' and 'Cricket in the Parks'
