A Charles II oak panel back open armchair
The back panel carved with a Tudor rose emanating from a small gadrooned vase, with additional scrolling fleur-de-lys shaped flora, all beneath an S-scroll filled arch, with leaf and berry filled spandrels, the uprights carved with a larger version of the S-scrolls, the arched cresting again with S-scroll carving above stylised leaves, the downswept open arms on baluster-turned front supports, raised on conforming turned front legs joined by channel moulded stretchers, 65cm wide x 69cm deep x 110.5cm high, (25.5" wide x 27" deep x 43.5" high)

  • Literature: T. Jellinek, Early British Chairs and Seats 1500 to 1700, illustrates an armchair, dated to 1670, p.74, pl.57, from the same workshop. The similarity in the design and style of carving is quite striking.
