Footnotes

  • The name and date found on this chest, together with the drawer arrangement, are particularly uncommon features to be found on a mid-18th century chest of drawers.

The Daniel Lucas named on this chest could have been the carpenter who lived at St. Pancras, near Chichester, in the first half of the 18th Century. Various documents survive in the West Sussex Record Office naming him - in 1713 he leased a property in Eastgate Square from the Dean and Chapter of Chichester Cathedral for 30 years at 20 shillings a year - and he stood surety at several marriages in Chichester in the 1720s. Alternatively, the Daniel Lucas commemorated on this chest might have been his son, also called Daniel. In 1936, whilst work was being undertaken on a building in Chichester called 'Trigg's Corner', workmen found a small bottle containing a note dated 1741 which said that Daniel Lucas, son of Daniel Lucas, carpenter and millwright, had built 'Trigg's Corner', and it challenged any workman of Chichester - or any many in England - to perform as well [West Sussex Record Office, Add. MS 18153].
