Footnotes

  • Provenance: On display in The Great Chamber, East Riddlesden Hall, West Yorkshire, since 1959. Illustrated in the current National Trust Members' Handbook. p. 298.

There are design elements to this bed that may assign a Yorkshire attribution. The area around Leeds, as far South-West as Halifax, is renowned for furniture characterised by inlaid floral panels, similar to those found on the headboard, and dated to the middle of the 17th century. As Chinnery in Oak Furniture, p. 470, points out the work is distinctly 'Elizabethan' in its character...an archaic survival of an earlier taste, particularly in the case of the inlaid panels. These are decorated with a variety of plants which issue from a variety of flowerpots and mounds. A further Yorkshire 'signature' design is to be found on the bulbous end-posts with the use of heavy cross-hatched filled lobes, ibid., p. 474, Fig.4:126.
