Footnotes

  • Provenance: Purchased from Huntington Antiques, Stow-on-the-Wold, 1989. Described as a Collectors' dresser.

Literature: Bebb, Welsh Furniture, Vol II., illustrates a comparable dresser p. 99, Pl. 833. The author explains how this rare type of dresser evolved from the earlier cwpwrdd tridarn. The base of the dresser is similar to a tridarn, with the traditional central cupboard section combined into the rack and set within deep sides and shaped over-hanging frieze. Further comparisons can be drawn with the tridarn illustrated Chinnery, Oak Furniture, p. 342, Fig. 3:332, and the canopy dresser illustrated along side, fig.3:333. Over time, with the eventual greater emphasis on display rather than storage the fully shelved rack developed.
