An oak coffer, Westmorland, circa 1700
The boarded hinged lid with chip-carved edge, above four panels carved with a scroll-leaf design, the top rail carved with flowerheads, the outer muntins carved with the initials A B, on extended stile supports, 146.5cm wide x 55cm deep x 76cm high, (57.5" wide x 21.5" deep x 29.5" high)

  • The custom of inscribing initials, and often dates, was especially common in the Lake District and surrounding areas during the late 17th/early 18th century.
