A 16th Century/17th Century carved oak frieze or panel
Possibly once painted with the coat of arms of the Earls of Shrewsbury
Carved to the centre with a blank cartouche within a laurel wreath, flanked to either side by a dog or Talbot hound, all between scrolling foliage and flowers, and a pair of mythical beasts, in a later frame, 123cm wide x 29.5cm high

  • In heraldry the arms of the Earls of Shrewsbury are supported by 'two talbots argent', possibly a reference to their descent from the Talbot family.
