  • PROVENANCE:
With the Fine Art Society, London, April 1974, where purchased by the present owner

In the early 1920s Cadell returned to painting 'salon interiors' at his Ainslie Place studio. While referencing the sumptuous series he painted in George St pre-war, the later works feature crisper lines and stronger colour. The draped fabric appears in the Embroidered Cloak (Ferens Art Gallery, Hull) and the pictures stacked in the background include the famous red chair which became a principal motif in the Art Deco-inspired works of the period.
