This is one of a series relating to Cadell's monumental 'Afternoon', an interior celebrating the genteel and rarefied pre-war Edinburgh in which the artist revelled. The sitter here also appears as one of three in the larger work, and the setting in the artist's George St. studio is remarkably similar. At this stage, Cadell used figures principally as motifs within a decorative whole, and her features are typically indistinct. The handling and chalky palette are archetypal Cadell of the period.
