Bearing four character hall mark, Republic
Of baluster form, finely enamelled to one side with a group of scholars and attendants, bearing a red overglaze shen de tang zhi [Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue] mark,
23cm high

  • Davison notes that this Hall was in the Yuanmingyuan (known as the Old Summer Palace), built by the Kangxi emperor and extended by his successors. Davison associates this mark with the Kangxi, Daoguang and Republic periods. Entry 1094 in 'The New and Revised Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics', published 2010.
