Qianlong
The exterior painted with a rifleman and piper after prints by George Bickham, separated by peonies and peaches, the interior centre enamelled with a portrait medallion of Bonnie Prince Charlie encircled by a border of peony branches (restored damage),
26cm diameter

Footnotes

  • The piper is a reversed copy of the frontispiece engraved by George Bickham for 'A short history of the Highland Regiment', 1743. The rifleman is from the same date and is also shown in the uniform of the Highlanders or 42nd Foot. In the same year four prints by Bickham were sold by John Bowles as a group to commemorate five members of the regiment who were convicted of mutiny. Four were shot on 18 July 1743 and the fifth, Piper Macdonnel (or possibly McPherson), was transported to Georgia. It is probable that the Bowles publication was sent to China to commission this bowl.
