A set of six George III Scots laburnum dining chairs
late 18th century, Perthshire
Each chair with three vertical splats centred by a roundel and enclosed by a 'brander back' above a drop in seat, on square tapering legs joined by an H shaped stretcher, and two associated with three tapering vase shaped splats, (8), 49.5cm wide, 49cm deep, 91cm high (19" wide, 19" deep, 35.5" high).

  • A closely related set of chairs is held in the collection of Blair Castle, Perthshire, see Bernard D. Cotton, Scottish Vernacular Furniture, published by Thames and Hudson 2008, figure 295, page 173.
    The Blair Castle chairs are also made of Scots laburnum and are of very similar dimensions, with triple splats and carved roundels. The difference is that in those chairs the fan shaped splats, present in both sets of chairs, are pierced rather than solid, nevertheless it is likely that both sets originated form the same workshop, possibly on the Blair Atholl estate.
    Scots laburnum grown in Perthshire is recognised as being of particularly good quality, the size of the trees giving the chair maker wider shafts to work with and the timber greater stability.
