Footnotes

  • Lt.Col.Charles John Wallace served with the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry through the First World War and into the 1930s. Despite a distinguished career, there is evidence of a level of unpopularity among his men highlighted in an extract from 'Proud Heritage, The Story of the Highland Light Infantry', volume four, page 120. The passage describes that whilst at camp at Tain the then Major Wallace courted the retribution of his subalterns by his, 'nagging references to the noise they were making.'. To exact their revenge the soldiers collected the bins from the cook houses and emptied them around his tent to be greeted the following morning by a chorus of very noisy seagulls!
Through the First World War Lt Col. Wallace was awarded the O.B.E. (Military Division), the Military Cross, the Croix de Guerre with palm and was mentioned in dispatches five times.

We are grateful to Sandy Leishman and the Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum for their assistance in cataloguing this piece.
