A 18th century basket hilted back sword in the manner of Walter Allan of Stirling
With later presentation plaque, the 92cm single edge blade with two fullers and traces of engraving, iron basket guard composed of waved bars of rectangular section framing a large central panel and two side panels, the former incised with pairs of circles and pierced with keyhole slots, the forward loops with open wavy bars, the side panels pierced with triangles, hearts and circles, rear quillon with incised decoration scrolled wrist-guard, contained within a leather scabbard with incised decoration and engraved steel mounts, the basket hilt mounted with a silver shield shaped cartouche engraved in Gaelic and dated 1860, a literal translation of the inscription is 'As a Grateful Remembrance from the Edinburgh Highland Society for the Secretary William Cattanach for his exceptional achievement, diligence, fidelity, voluntarily given, in maintaining Highland Activity 1860'.
