Of Royal Interest: A Victorian granite bracelet, by Rettie of Aberdeen
Formed as a series of six circular cabochon-cut granites, flanking an oval cabochon-cut granite, all framed by Celtic knotwork design silver mounts, the central plaque opening to reveal a locket compartment containing a overpainted photograph of the Princess Louise, the back with presentation inscription 'TO THE MARCHONESS OF ELY IN RECOLLECTION OF THE DHU LOCH 3RD OCTR 1870 FROM VICTORIA R', length 18.50cm, to a fitted case retailed by Rettie, Aberdeen

Footnotes

  • The recipient of this bracelet was Jane Loftus (née Hope-Vere), Marchioness of Ely.

An extract from 'Queen Victoria's Highland Journals', Lomond Press, 1994, edited by David Duff, reads for 3rd October 1870:

'This was an eventful day! Our dear Louise was engaged to Lord Lorne. The event took place during a walk from Glassalt Shiel to the Dhu Loch. She had gone there with Janie Ely, the Lord Chancellor, and Lorne.'

It is likely the bracelet was commissioned soon after the 3rd October 1870, as a commemorative gift due to Princess Louise's engagement. Louise, the youngest of Queen Victoria's daughters, upon her marriage became Marchioness of Lorne and Duchess of Argyll.
