Footnotes

  • The recipient of this bracelet was Jane Loftus (née Hope-Vere), Marchioness of Ely.

An extract from 'Queen Victoria's Highland Journals', Lomond Press, 1994, edited by David Duff, reads for 3rd October 1870:

'This was an eventful day! Our dear Louise was engaged to Lord Lorne. The event took place during a walk from Glassalt Shiel to the Dhu Loch. She had gone there with Janie Ely, the Lord Chancellor, and Lorne.'

It is likely the bracelet was commissioned soon after the 3rd October 1870, as a commemorative gift due to Princess Louise's engagement. Louise, the youngest of Queen Victoria's daughters, upon her marriage became Marchioness of Lorne and Duchess of Argyll.
