Footnotes

  • Provenance: gifted by H.R.H. Edward The Prince of Wales, to Mr H.A.Macrae, originally from Buckie in Scotland and a member of the British Diplomatic service in Japan. Macrae assisted crew Prince Edward's yacht in the race which won this prize. Mr Macrae rose to the position of Vice-Consul of Hakodate. His nephew, who is offering the bronze for sale recalls the family story that the Prince's Japanese hosts deliberately threw the race to ensure the winner was their honoured guest. Following the prize being awarded the Prince decided that he was already overburdened with diplomatic gifts and duly bestowed the bronze lion on Mr Macrae.
