Casino, Royan signed 'Peploe' (lower right), inscribed 'Casino, Royan' (verso) oil on board 27 x 35 cm. (10 5/8 x 13 3/4 in.)
PROVENANCE: Private Collection, U.K.
Peploe and JD Fergusson left Paris for Royan in the summer of 1910, and were particularly inspired by the harbour. Peploe's work shows him experimenting with brushwork, whether hatched/broken as in this case or fluid and sweeping. He often maps his compositions in red, and works with pure colour. This picture is reminiscent of his Luxembourg Gardens series and displays the enduring influence of Post Impressionism.
