Footnotes

  • The initials on the watch are those of the Earl of Buckinghamshire, Augustus Edward Hobart (later Hobart-Hampden) and his wife, the Countess of Buckinghamshire, Maria Isabella.

Reverend Augustus Edward Hobart (c.1793-1885) became the sixth Earl of Buckinghamshire in February 1849 after the death of his heirless brother. The Earldom had been created in 1746 for John Hobart. In 1878 the additional surname of Hampden was assumed through royal licence.

A graduate of Brasenose College, Oxford University, the future Earl joined the clergy serving as Rector in Bennington, Lincolnshire; Walton-on-the Wold, Leicestershire and as Rector and Prebendary of Wolverhampton. He was married twice, firstly in 1816 to Mary Williams and then after her death in 1826 to his first cousin through his mother's Cataneo line, Maria Isabella Egremont (c.1797-1873), daughter of Reverend Godfrey Egremont.
