  Sir Fitzroy Maclean was made baronet in 1957 in recognition of his diplomatic and military services during World War II. He was a man of many facets, Eton and Oxford educated, he joined the Cameron Highlanders in the late 1930's serving as a private, and later with their commando division. He was later invited to join the Special Air Service as one of its founder recruits by David Stirling.
  
  Notable diplomatic successes included acting as envoy to Winston Churchill having parachuted into German occupied Yugoslavia, where his close relations with Yosip Tito proved significant.
  
  After the war Sir Fitzroy spent time as a diplomat in the Soviet Union and in 1950 wrote his first book. He was friends with Evelyn Waugh, whom he lead in a parachuting expedition, and Ian Fleming, who is understood to have used some elements of Sir Fitzroy's persona for of his James Bond character.
