A Cased Victorian Cavalry Officer's Presentation Sword
89cm blade etched with foliage, the Rod of Aesculapius, crowned VR cypher, a stand of arms, presentation inscription and the recipient's arms and crests, plated three bar hilt, chiseled overall with acorns and oak leaves, wire bound fish skin covered grip, in its plated steel scabbard engraved with foliate scrolls, two suspension rings, complete with silver lace sword slings, contained in its blue plush lined mahogany case, the lid with blank escutcheon.

  • The inscription reads: Presented by the Kiveton Park Troop of the 1st West York Yeomanry Cavry To Captain J. C. Athorp (sic) as a mark of their esteem, Oct. 7th 1863.

    James Carver Athorpe was born 9th August 1803. He was an M.A., J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Derby and achieved the rank of major in the regiment. He died in 1880.
